DIMINISHED VALUE APPRAISAL

A picture of the Car collision on the road

A total loss appraisal will be required if you intend to contest the value provided to you by your insurance company. We will view the vehicle at the storage facility, take pics and determine the pre- accident condition of the vehicle. We then compile the data, research numerous value sites, download current comparables to justify our value and prepare the report for you to submit to the insurance company.

What is Diminished Value? To summarize, when a vehicle is in an accident, the stigma associated with that damage, whether heavy or light, reduces the resale value of that vehicle even if the repair is done perfectly. As with the sample above, the pre-accident value was $80,000, the post accident value was $62,000 which renders a diminished value of $18,000. The words Total Loss and Write off are interchangeable.

A vehicle is considered to be a total loss / write off if the insurance company determines that the total cost to repair it to pre-accident condition, plus fees for storage, salvage and a replacement rental car (if included in your policy), is more than a certain percentage of the car's actual cash value. Insurers set their own allowable percentage (typically around 70 to 80 per cent) and use their own formulas to determine a car's value and estimated repair costs.

If your vehicle has been in a collision and your insurance company tells you they are writing it off, they will then make you an offer to settle your claim.  The last thing you should have to worry about is a fair settlement.  At this point, you need a quick settlement and enough money to replace your vehicle.

Unfortunately, insurance companies don't always offer fair settlements on total loss insurance claims. It's just an offer and many times, thousands of dollars less than the actual cash value of your vehicle.

If you think your vehicle is worth more than the insurance company says it is, there is a good chance you are eligible for increased compensation from the insurance company.  The only way for you to get that compensation is with a trusted appraiser’s objective appraisal of your vehicle’s value.  We provide total loss appraisals and negotiation services throughout Alberta.
